Sould homes have false ceilings? Many experts say that the risks outweigh the advantages.
Until a few years ago, most of us lived in homes with high ceilings you could only touch with a long pole. The use of false ceilings was restricted to commercial buildings with heavy-duty lighting and air-conditioning.But more and more home owners are opting for this `convenience', which hides ugly things like wiring, light holders and AC ducts. Few, however, realize the risks that come with it.
It's getting claustrophobic
With heights of modern ceilings dropping down from 12 feet to 10 feet or even less, we are already living with a low roof over our heads. A false ceiling under the original one brings it within touching distance. The result is more enclosed spaces and a less airy environment. This is in stark contrast to the simple elegance of old-style houses. Even today, high-ceiling houses are considered very comfortable in both summer and winter.
The height of the roof kept the buildings cool in summer and warm in winter. Their energy consumption was also minimal. With modern homes normally having little cross-ventilation, ACs have become a necessity to beat the heat and humidity.
While experts point out that a false ceiling makes airconditioning more efficient — and reduces power consumption — many believe houses with proper cross-ventilation — such as skylights and bigger windows — would not require it.

As the use of false ceilings increases, mishaps are also on the rise. There is always the risk of a piece of the ceiling falling on someone's head. Poor construction and use of substandard material is partly to blame for this. Often, contractors and workers fixing the ceiling lack the know-how to do a good job.
In fact, senior architect Dikshu Kukreja says "reckless use" of false ceilings in residential buildings should be avoided. Apart from safety issues, it becomes difficult to clean the area between the roof and the false ceiling. This allows insects and rodents to proliferate. Also, there is no way to check for leaks or cracks in the ceiling.

Plug the gaps
Can false ceilings be made safer? Experts say the first step should be taken by the government which needs to frame safety guidelines for their use and construction. Kukreja advocates use of better and lighter materials. However, another well-known architect Sudhir Vohra believes that in a city like Delhi, false ceilings are a necessity as normally cross-ventilation is not possible in smaller plots.
He says the safety issue has to be addressed by using better materials and employing trained manpower to fix the ceiling. The insect problem can be dealt with by using better sealants, he adds.

What is False Ceiling?

A false ceiling is a ceiling made beneath the main ceiling of the room or building. In other words, it is a second layer of roof suspended from the main roof with the help of metal or wooden frame. It is also known as dropped ceiling. False ceiling has multiple advantages. It improves the aesthetics of the room. False ceiling is provided to keep the room cool during summer and warm in winter. It is also provided to conceal the ugly mesh of electrical wires, light fixtures, air-conditioning ducts and other fixtures.

The false ceiling is hung or fixed in a framework made of Aluminium or GI sections or wooden batten fixed with the main ceiling. The false ceiling is fixed at a minimum distance of 8 inches from the main ceiling. False ceiling is made by various materials like Plaster of Paris, Gypsum board, Plywood, PVC sheets etc. The choice of material depends upon the use and design of the false ceiling. Different materials have their own advantages and disadvantages. Few of them are discussed below.

Plaster of Paris is smooth and suits for all types of lighting arrangements. It can be molded into any type of designs and shapes. There are preferred for ornamental design and light works. It is suspended in the framework of Aluminium T-sections. Its only disadvantage is that it is not much durable and its colour fades away with time.

It is light weight, fire resistant and thermally insulated material. Gypsum boards are available in size of 600mm x 600mm with thickness ranging from 9mm to 15mm. It is fixed in the framework of GI channels.

PVC false ceiling is attractive, durable and water resistant. Since it is made from PVC material hence its maintenance cost is almost zero. In this type of false ceiling PVC panels are fixed in the framework of Aluminium T-sections. PVC panels are available in plenty of attractive colours and designs.
